Principle
The intra-gastric balloon works by filling the stomach. This causes a feeling of satiety and a reduction in dietary intake. Treatment with the balloon is combined with
dietetic and behavioural treatment.

Characteristics
Non-sterile, single use, bio-compatible, radio-opaque, filled with water and air.
Indications
• Body Mass Index (BMI) > 30 kg/m2
• Before bariatric surgery for the
“Super Obese” (BMI > 50 kg/m2)
Expected weight loss
At 6 months in the order of 32% of the excess weight, which corresponds to weight loss of about 14 to 18 kg. Currently no significant study on the maintenance of weight loss over time.
Average duration of the operation
• Insertion: 20-35 minutes (under general anaesthetic with or without intubation).
• Removal: 30-90 minutes (under general anaesthetic with intubation).
Average length of hospitalisation
• Day surgery or short hospitalisation for the insertion.
• Day surgery for the removal.
• Duration of treatment: ≈ 6 months maximum
